Virginia's OSHA Training Requirements Every Worker Must Know

New Year Sale 2023

Accommodated under the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI), the Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) program owns the authoritative control of Virginia's State Plan.

Though Virginia's State Plan has incorporated most OSHA Standards, Virginia applies its separate Standards and regulations in the following sectors:

General Industry

  • Reverse Signal Operation Safety Requirements for Vehicles, Machinery, and Equipment for General Industry
  • Telecommunications, General Approach Distance for Electrical Hazards
  • Confined Spaces in the Telecommunications Industry
  • Tree Trimming Operations
  • Overhead High Voltage Line Safety Act

Construction

  • Medical Services and First Aid
  • Sanitation
  • Steel Erection
  • Reverse Signal Operation Safety Requirements for Vehicles, Machinery, and Equipment for the Construction Industry
  • Overhead High Voltage Line Safety Act

Agriculture

  • Field Sanitation

The category of workers who come under Federal OSHA Jurisdiction are as follows:

  • Federal employment
  • The U.S. Postal Service plus private contractor-operated facilities engaged by USPS
  • Private-sector maritime operations (i.e., shipyards, marine terminals, long shoring)
  • Employment at federal military facilities and other locations with exclusive federal jurisdiction
  • Employment at the US Department of Energy's Southeastern Power Administration Kerr-Philpott System
  • Working conditions of aircraft cabin crewmembers onboard aircraft in operation
  • Any hazard, industry, area, operation, or facility where the State Plan is unable to exercise jurisdiction effectively

Those employers subject to VOSH regulation should ensure that training programs incorporating Virginia's separate standards are according to state requirements.

Moreover, since most employers require their employees to be OSHA certified and equipped with adequate general safety knowledge, OSHA suggests its OSHA 10 Hour courses for beginners in the General and Construction industries. In contrast, OSHA 30 Hour courses are intended for supervisors and managers.
